'An oft-repeated myth about the Clinton administration is that although it was overly tough on crime back in the 1990s, at least its policies were good for the economy and for black unemployment rates. The truth is more troubling. As unemployment rates sank to historically low levels for white Americans in the 1990s, the jobless rate among black men in their 20s who didn’t have a college degree rose to its highest level ever. This increase in joblessness was propelled by the skyrocketing incarceration rate.
Why is this not common knowledge? Because government statistics like poverty and unemployment rates do not include incarcerated people. As Harvard sociologist Bruce Western explains: “Much of the optimism about declines in racial inequality and the power of the US model of economic growth is misplaced once we account for the invisible poor, behind the walls of America’s prisons and jails.” When Clinton left office in 2001, the true jobless rate for young, non-college-educated black men (including those behind bars) was 42 percent. This figure was never reported. Instead, the media claimed that unemployment rates for African Americans had fallen to record lows, neglecting to mention that this miracle was possible only because incarceration rates were now at record highs. Young black men weren’t looking for work at high rates during the Clinton era because they were now behind bars—out of sight, out of mind, and no longer counted in poverty and unemployment statistics.'

At a news conference on Wednesday in Columbia, South Carolina, Bernie Sanders criticized Hillary Clinton’s record on welfare reform, pointing to her support for a 1996 bill that he says was disastrous for poor families.
The bill dismantled the former Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) program and replaced it with Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). The primary issues were that the new TANF program was not tied to inflation, had a five-year lifetime limit for recipients, and local governments could easily reallocate the funds for other state needs and ignore needy families.
Since the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA) has been passed, the number of families in extreme poverty has doubled, according to Sanders — though some have claimed an increase as high as 150%. As First Lady at the time, Clinton was instrumental in rounding up the votes to ensure the bill’s passage, which Bill Clinton signed into law.

A day after many observers declared it nearly impossible for Sen. Hillary Clinton to overtake Sen. Barack Obama to win the Democratic presidential nomination, Clinton told USA Today, "I have a much broader base to build a winning coalition on." As evidence, the story said, Clinton cited an Associated Press article "that found how Sen. Obama's support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again, and how whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me.
"There's a pattern emerging here," Clinton said.
To many, it was a shocking statement — equating "hard-working Americans" with "white Americans" and a naked attempt to cast herself as "the white candidate" in the race.

It was her offhand reference to “working, hard-working Americans, white Americans” that raises the specter of old Dixie demagogues like Wallace and Lester Maddox. Was she dog-whistling to the voters of Kentucky and West Virginia?
While I still cannot believe she actually intended any such nefarious meaning, she seemed to be equating “hard-working Americans” with “white Americans.” Which is precisely what Wallace and his cohort used to do with their drawling refrain about welfare and affirmative action. This is the grating sound of Richard Nixon’s Southern strategy, even though Tricky Dick would never quite stoop to saying such things in public.

A 1996 NPR interview with #HillaryClinton has recently resurfaced, in which the current Democratic front-runner shockingly embraced conservatism and reiterated how proud she was to support a #segregationist presidential candidate.
In 1964, when Clinton was 18, she worked on Barry Goldwater’s presidential campaign. Goldwater was running for president during the same year that the Civil Rights Act was passed, and advocated repealing the landmark legislation ensconcing the right of people of color, women, religious minorities, and other groups to be free from discrimination.
Promotion of segregation was a platform Goldwater defended all the way to the 1964 Republican National Convention in San Francisco, in which he famously said, “Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice.” In that same speech, Goldwater also said “Moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue,” which, ironically, could also be a criticism of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign.
In the interview, Clinton told #NPR’s #ScottSimon that her political beliefs were "rooted in the conservatism that I was raised with," and talked about being a "Goldwater girl" in 1964:
SCOTT SIMON: I mean, did you ever back in the ’60s, between when — I believe you were a Goldwater girl —
HILLARY CLINTON: That’s right.
SCOTT SIMON: — and whenever you became politically –

In defiance of her supporters’ wishes, her critics’ open calls, and even her own promises, Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton continues to block the publication of transcripts from the speeches she gave to several banks, including Goldman Sachs and Bank of America, in 2013 and 2014. According to MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski, however, Clinton may no longer have much of a choice.
As the Nevada caucuses were wrapping up on Saturday, Brzezinski mentioned off-handedly that she “[knew] a print reporter who has the actual transcripts, and they are working on this.” As you can see in the clip above, her on-air comment came in response to Bloomberg host and MSNBC guest John Heilemann’s argument that the lack of publicly-available transcripts encouraged reporters to seek out and record the recollections of bank employees who had attended the speeches—an imperfect process which has not been particularly flattering to Clinton. One attendee told Politico, for example, that the candidate “sounded more like a Goldman Sachs managing director” that a former Secretary of State.
Brzezinski did not elaborate on the identity, employer, or motivations of the unnamed reporter who apparently obtained access to the speech transcripts. But it’s hard to imagine a scenario in which such a leak was not carefully orchestrated by Clinton’s own press team. After all, access to the transcripts appears to be tightly controlled; in the years since she gave the speeches, no public report has ever directly quoted her verbatim remarks. And the candidate’s most recent effort to distract the public from the same transcripts—a bizarre gambit in which she stated during a Democratic town hall that “I am happy to release anything I have when everybody else does the same”—quickly fizzled after her Democratic opponent, Bernie Sanders, accepted her challenge by noting he had never given a single speech to a Wall Street firm.
By providing the transcripts to a carefully-vetted reporter, the Clinton camp would likely to maintain some control over the way the resulting story is presented. This is not to suggest the reporter—if this reporter is even real!—would allow a Clinton spokesperson to dictate the precise description and framing of the speech’s contents. It’s just to point out that such an article—if the article ever materializes!—would almost certainly feature detailed comments from Clinton’s camp about the speeches’ most noteworthy or controversial passages. Considering her recalcitrance thus far, we’re guessing there’s more than few of those.
It’s true, of course, that releasing the transcripts at all is a much-needed demonstration of transparency from a candidate who often seems allergic to the whole concept of transparency. But the act of publication is unlikely to mitigate the troubling fact that Clinton didn’t want them published in the first place. Indeed, if the speeches’ contents are sufficiently unsettling, it’s easy to see a new accusation gaining currency: That Clinton authorized the transcripts’ release only after the Nevada caucuses had vastly increased the odds of her nomination over an opponent who has repeatedly and enthusiastically criticized Wall Street’s avarice.
In any case, it’s hard to see how Clinton doesn’t release the speech transcripts at this point. Regardless of her campaign’s underlying strategy (or lack thereof), the corner into which she has painted herself doesn’t provide her many other options.

The Hillary Clinton campaign now appears willing to resort to just about anything — including using underhanded campaign tactics in order to reverse the national tide turning against her in the four early primary states (and state caucuses). It’s readily apparent that her campaign has begun deploying one of the sneakiest tricks of political survey methodology. It’s called “push polling.” If you don’t understand what I’m talking about, I’ll get to that a bit later. Meanwhile, by all accounts Bernie Sanders continues to run what’s generally been a positive campaign without attacking his opponent. I’ll eventually explain why Clinton’s troublesome practice of establishment politics as usual could be the difference in gaining the nomination, unless more people rise up and express outrage against these disputable practices.

Disingenuously arguing a position? Vanishing documents? Selling out members of her own party to advance a personal agenda? Classic Hillary. Neither my first column on the subject nor this one were designed to show that Hillary is dishonest. I don’t really think that’s in dispute. Rather, they were designed to show that she has been this way for a very long time – a fact worth considering for anyone contemplating voting for her for president of the United States.
By the way, there’s something else that started a long time ago.
“She would go around saying, ‘I’m dating a person who will some day be president,’” Polk said. “It was like a Babe Ruth call. And because of that comment she made, I watched Bill Clinton’s political efforts as governor of Arkansas, and I never counted him out because she had made that forecast.”
Bill knew what he wanted a long time ago. Clearly, so did Hillary, and her tactics for trying to achieve it were established even in those early days.

Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton has a new honorific title: “Worst Ethics Violator of 2015.”
The Foundation for Accountability and Government Trust (FACT), a Washington-based think tank, released a year-end list of Worst Ethics Violators for this ill-begotten calendar year. Clinton ran away with the contest.
FACT’s list of ethical violators was strictly nonpartisan, with Democrat Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) showing up on the list alongside Republican Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) for their own ethical quandaries.
“Elected officials are sent to Washington to follow and uphold the law and so they need to be held to the highest standard of ethics,” FACT executive director Matthew G. Whitaker said in a statement.
Even the appearance of impropriety can quickly erode public trust, and Mrs. Clinton is in a league of her own.
